The Rostrum Essay Competition is organised every year by RostrumLegal to promote original legal writing and research work in the field of law. We are delighted and proud to announce the fifth edition of the competition. The competition was first conducted by RostrumLegal in the year 2012. Prizes worth Rs. 3 Lakh 57 Thousand will be awarded to the participants.

Are you passionate about Legal Research and Writing? If yes, then put pen to paper and get ready to participate! There is no specific theme for this year’s competition. Participants can write on any topic of their interest from the field of law. We urge all the participants to be creative and innovative in the way they express their arguments in the essay.

The competition has received an incredible response in the past four editions. We have received more than 1500 abstracts and more than 400 essays from participants from all around the world. The participating students hail from top law schools and universities from India and the world.

Who can participate?

The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate law students.

How to participate?

Step 1: Submit your abstract by November 15, 2019.

Step 2: Register online, if selected for participation.

Step 3: Submit your essay along with copyright agreement by email

Important Dates

November 15, 2019 – Last day for the abstract submission by email. (Submit by 23:59 Indian Standard Time)

November 18, 2019 – Results: Release of the abstract selection list. (16:00 Hrs. Indian Standard Time)

November 20, 2019 – Last day for online registration (Register by 23:59 Indian Standard Time)

January 31, 2019 – Last day for submission of essays by email. (Submit by 23:59 Indian Standard Time)

Awards and Prizes


1st Prize – Rs. 20,000/- Cash

2nd Prize – Rs. 15,000/- Cash

3rd Prize – Rs. 10,000/- Cash

Rank 4th to 10th – Rs. 1,000/- Cash for each participant.


Essay of all the participants ranked 1st to 10th will be published online in UGC-CARE listed Rostrum’s Law Review [ISSN: 2321 – 3787].


All the registered participants will receive a RostrumLegal Gift Card worth Rs. 4000/- each.

All the participants submitting abstracts for participation in the competition will receive a RostrumLegal Gift Card worth Rs. 2000/- each.


Certificate of Participation will be awarded to all the registered participants.

Selection Criteria

The abstracts and essays will be selected keeping in mind the following criterion:

1. How dynamic, contemporary is the topic.
2. The quality of arguments made.
3. Referencing and citation of the legal authorities.
4. How focused the approach is to discuss the issues in the essay.
5. The manner of organizing the content.

Submission Guidelines

Participants can write on ANY TOPIC ON LAW of their interest.

Co-Authorship is allowed up to 2 co-authors.

The abstract should not exceed 500 words.

The word limit for the essay is 6000 words (Including Footnotes and References).

All the submissions shall be made in .doc or .docx format.

An essay should be in compliance with the Rostrum’s Law Review’s publication policy.

Further guidelines for citation and submission will be emailed to the selected participants after registration.

Registration and Fees

Participants whose abstracts are selected are required to register for the competition.

Registration can be done online by filling up the form and by online payment of registration fee.

The registration fee for this edition of competition is Rs. 2300/- (O Thousand Three Hundred Rupees Only).

Terms & Conditions

The promoter of this competition is RostrumLegal.

The eligibility criteria and the deadlines shall be strictly followed. The submissions not adhering to any of these shall be rejected without any explanation.

We follow a strict policy on academic fairness and plagiarism. The essay and abstract must be original work of the author and must not have been previously published.

The author will retain the copyright of the work but agrees to grant the exclusive publication rights of the essay and the abstract to Rostrumlegal

The cash prizes will be disbursed in Indian National Rupees.

By entering, all entrants agree to abide by each and every term and condition. RostrumLegal reserves the right to withhold prizes for violation of any of the terms and conditions.

Entrants represent and warrant that their entry is the original work of the party named in the entry submission and that they have the full power and authority to enter the work in their own name.

The entrant agrees to indemnify RostrumLegal for any infringements of, for example, statutory or common-law copyright, or 3rd party proprietary rights, or any other loss resulting from a breach of these warranties.

Entries which contain, in the sole opinion of RostrumLegal, any material which is defamatory, obscene, illegal or inappropriate will be invalidated. Any misrepresentation or fraud will also invalidate the entry.

Winners may be required to submit valid identification and proof of qualification or status as a student before receiving their prize.

Entrants agree to allow the free use of their name, likeness, and general location for publicity and news purposes during this and future promotions.

RostrumLegal reserves the right to withhold prizes for any invalidated entries. RostrumLegal accepts no responsibility for lost or delayed entries, data charges, or any other costs associated with the entry, nor will it be responsible for technical, hardware, or software failures of any kind or lost or unavailable network connections that may limit or prevent the person from participating in the Competition.

Personal information collected will be used for RostrumLegal purposes only and managed in accordance with the Data Protection Law of India.

The organizers reserve the right to amend the rules of the competition at any point in time during the competition. Participants will be notified about the same by email. In the event of any dispute, the decision of the organisers shall remain final.
